Aftermath of the 2017 Dallas Cowboys’ OTA’s

Here are the results for the Aftermath, Fallout and some Praise for the 2017 Dallas Cowboys OTA’s held in Frisco, Texas at the Star.  Bear in mind, that these OTA’s are voluntary.

There are certain veterans that will be starting on September 10, barring injuries.

Dak Prescott no longer has to look over his shoulder at Tony Romo (one bad play and out of the game).  His dedication along with another off season to prefect his footwork will allow Dak to play even better football in 2017.

Jason Witten will return for his 15th season.

Dez Bryant will have his best season in three years.

Terrance Williams will be starting along with Cole Beasley.

Zeke will run over more secondary players.

The offensive line will remain the best in the league with La’el Collins moving outside to right tackle.

Rod Marinelli is smiling more.  With all the options he now has to work with on defense, this unit will improve again this season.

Sean Lee,  Byron Jones and Orlando Scandrick are the only defenders penciled in not to share their jobs.

David Irving has lost a potential starting job on the defensive line with a failed drug test.  Sound familiar?  This is getting old.  Irving shall be suspended for the first four regular season games.  How disappointing this is to all of the Cowboys’ Nation.

Cornerback Nolan Carrol seems to believe his is above the team rules.  Although Carrol is a grown man, his made a childish decision not to use the provided Uber service  after drinking, casting doubt on his availability to open the season in place of departed Brandon Carr.

Apologies are NOT enough.  These two men need to step up and voluntarily serve some extra community services for the damage they have caused to the organization.

Mark Nzeocha has suffered another injury requiring his knee to be scoped.  It will take several weeks to recover from this.  Mark has had nearly all bad luck in Dallas, as far as injuries go.

“Some” Praise

The percentage of players to participate in this season’s OTA’s shows the dedication to the TEAM.

If Jonathan Cooper is able to capture the starting left guard position, the Cowboys will have five potential first round players starting on the offensive line.  Collins would have been a definite first round pick had he not be dragged into a murder investigation.  This will be a very interesting position battle at left guard.  Joe Looney and Emmett Cleary are ready to challenge for playing time.

Will McClay and his crew did another fine job of bringing in some talent during and after the draft.

All the secondary players that were brought in to replace Barry Church, J.J. Wilcox, Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne, are projected to be better than the departed players, with the exception of Church.  it will be hard to replace his 100 tackles per season; however, Jaylon Smith will solve at least half of those tackles.

Damontre Moore is going to surprise a lot of people this season,  His motor runs fast and he has the tools to steal a starting job on the defense.

Sure, you may make the point, a lot of these new faces are without NFL game experience, but remember, the core of this team is the returning leaders on both sides of the ball.   The coaches will have the new guys up to speed before the start of the regular season, with some kind of idea about the defensive line rotation.

The “Aftermath” of all this off season will show up on the field this coming season and this team is determined that home field advantage will not be the end of the season in 2017.
